Uruguay joins the wave: science and data analysis in the labor market

Data Analytics Article

Data analysis has the added value of converting data into insights, that is, into meaningful observations or understandings that help guide actions and serve as input to generate new ideas.

Detecting repeating shapes, identifying trends and finding relationships that are not necessarily evident at first glance, allows us to understand what the data says about reality in order to ultimately make decisions and act upon it.

Data is ubiquitous in organizations. Knowing how to use it has potential benefits wherever this possibility is identified. The areas that can be improved through data analysis range from "hard" areas, such as accounting, to "soft" areas, such as human resources management.

Recognizing this opportunity, an increasing number of companies are looking for technicians and professionals with data analysis skills, beyond the positions strictly related to these functions.

In recent years, there has been an exponential growth in the demand for data management, processing and analytics skills, as well as for the programming languages used for these purposes (see graph).
Considering a broader context, the incidence of the IT sector in the demand for labor in Uruguay grew 6.5 percentage points in just four years.

WHAT JOBS ARE IN DEMAND IN URUGUAY?

On the one hand, there are the profiles associated with data analytics, which covers the process of obtaining, managing, processing and analyzing data. This field includes the positions of data analysts, data engineers and assistants, database administrators and data analytics developers, among the most in-demand positions.

Data science is a more specialized field, which consists of building models (e.g., language models such as ChatGPT) based on machine learning of data. These models allow not only to analyze existing data, but also to predict and make decisions based on the underlying patterns and relationships that are detected. In this field, the Data Scientist profile is the most demanded.

The demand for data science skills has also grown substantially in Uruguay: concepts such as machine learning and language modeling are beginning to appear with increasing frequency in the textual content of job advertisements.

From a structural point of view, 72% of the job opportunities in the area of Data Science and Analysis are aimed at highly qualified specialists.

This is a distinctive feature compared to the general labor market, where the main stream of employment opportunities is directed to medium and low-skilled operational positions (55%).
